American ships dominated trade with Hawaii and the difference in ambience was as stark as that between the conditions of the North Atlantic and central Pacific. The menu cover and pas-senger list [87-88] were issued aboard the Matson Line’s Lurline a month before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The shipboard newspaper, “The Matson Wireless,” featured a range of items culled from radio transmissions, but gave no hint that the United States would soon be plunged into World War II.
