übersichtskarte Leningrad-Charcow 1940

This 1940 German Map covers a region of the Soviet Union from Leningrad to Charcow. The map details the area from 30 to 42 degrees longitude and 50 to 61 degrees latitude. The map has a great amount of terrain detail that includes hills, mountains, rivers and lakes. It also details major roadways, railroads, cities, towns and airports in the region. What is most notable is what is lacking on the map however, boundaries between Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are completely missing. The border of Belarus for example is only labeled with “Weiss” meaning White in German (Belarus is known as “White Russia”). National lines are simply not drawn on the map at all, treating the entire region as if it was solely the terrain of a single national entity.
